Hey, Paesano’s!

Does everybody get that headline?  It is from a Lou Monte song that starts, “Hey, Paesano, twist Italiano, whoa-oh-oh-oh!”  I used to drive by Paesano’s Pizzeria in Mohawk  on my way home from work.  When I had a job.  Today on Facebook, they offered 20 percent off to all the workers laid off from my place of employment.  How nice!  I decided if they were going to support me, I would support them.

I knew only a slight hesitation, because, you know, weight loss goals.  Additionally, I had made myself pizza for dinner twice in the last week (should have done a cooking post!).  Then I thought: antipasto salad!  Of course!  I ordered 10 garlic wings as well, because, yum.

Mohawk has an old fashioned looking Main Street.

I made my order by phone and tried to do a few chores while I waited the 25 minutes the guy said it would take.  Mohawk is a very short drive away.  I paused outside to take a picture and to pet a passing dog.

I repeat: Yum!

The salad came with some delicious garlic bread.  I greatly enjoyed my meal and have leftovers for tomorrow.  Or later tonight!

Weight Loss Goals? What Weight Loss Goals?

The day after making a yummy salad with locally grown produce, we sent out for pizza, wings AND cookies from Salvatore’s Pizzeria in Herkimer. On the brighter side, I can give another shout-out to a local business.  On the darker side, my weight loss goals become merely weight loss daydreams.

It was Steven’s idea.  No, it really was!  I did not try very hard to dissuade him.  In my defense, Steven’s appetite is so capricious these days, when he actually gets a yen to eat something, I feel I ought to encourage it.  Additionally, we like to support a local business.  Stop laughing at me for rationalizing!  As if YOU never eat pizza (you know who you are).

Where was I?  Ah yes, feeling full and happy.  We got a small garlic pizza with sausage and black olives, chicken wings Siciliano, and two large chocolate chip cookies.  I had one slice of pizza and three wings, and, yes, I ate a cookie.  I make no promises regarding the leftovers.

We got delivery, which is always prompt and friendly.  Many of us have been sending out for food more often since the pandemic.  You can get that little frisson of virtue from supporting the local economy.  We are not sending out as often as we did in previous months, so I felt happy to do so today.

I am planning an extra long run tomorrow.  Additionally,  I still have a salad and other vegetables in my refrigerator.  I will get back on the path to my weight loss goals!  In the meantime,  I confess to having enjoyed this evening’s little detour.

Planning Ahead After Not Planning Supper

How about a fast shout-out to one of our favorite local businesses instead of my usual Wuss-out Wednesday.  It has not been the best of Wednesdays for me, largely because my body kept thinking it was Thursday. I hate these time warps, especially when I have to keep reminding myself that I am NOT one day closer to Friday (those of you who work weekends,  don’t hate on me, just substitute “next day off” for Friday).

When I came home, my husband Steve told me he had not gotten anything out of the freezer for supper.  I suggested a few meals, but I pretty much knew where he was headed.  I only felt bad for making a delivery person come out in the rain.  Then again, these are the hazards of the job.

We called our beloved Salvatore’s, getting chicken wings Siciliano and a small antipasto salad.  The good thing about these choices is (1) I can take leftover salad for my lunch tomorrow and (2) I can grab a leftover chicken wing tomorrow after work before we hustle off to rehearsal.  You see how I think ahead.  You might almost suspect I have my act together.  Nah!

What Weight Loss Goals?

I think it is time I admit to myself that I do not have weight loss goals, I have weight-loss daydreams.  Today at work, someone was selling candy bars for a kid’s sports team.  Obviously it is a good thing to support youth sports, and I am not one to just make a donation when a $2 donation will get me a candy bar.  Of course I took the candy bar!  Did I save it, or at least half of it for my skinny husband?  NO!

I thought, this is OK, because I am going running after work.  Shortly after I thought that, my legs informed me that I was not.  “We are going home and sitting on the couch like sensible people,” my body told me.  I did not have the oomph to argue.  It is Monday, after all.

If this wasn’t bad enough, Steven did not feel like the leftover pasta sauce I had suggested for dinner.  Oh, that is not the bad part.  The bad part is when he made a sensible alternative suggestion, I said, “Wouldn’t you like to send out for wings and antipasto?”  As a matter of fact, sending out for antipasto is not such a bad idea.  For one reason, it means I will have leftover salad for my lunch tomorrow.  For the chicken wings, I make no apology, but merely offer, in my defense, YUM!

Steven called Salvatore’s in Herkimer.  We got wings Siciliano, which are kind of a combination of medium sauce, garlic butter, and bleu cheese.  I repeat, yum.

Not Much of a Recipe

Today I offer a cooking post. Sort of. Well, regular readers know this is not a cooking blog and I’m nobody’s chef. Still, this is Wuss-out Wednesday and I didn’t quite wuss out on dinner. I’m writing a post about it.

The post really started last week when Steven made rice for dinner. It was brown rice. He put a can of mushrooms in it. There was some left over.

The next step came on Sunday. I wanted to offer food to the lovely people who helped us with our fence, so I put some chicken legs in the crock pot. I put butter, honey and mustard in it. This is from a recipe I got out of a book put out by a church group. The recipe is actually for chicken wings baked in the oven, but I thought it would be fine for legs in the crock pot. I was right. Again, we had leftovers.

It was Steven’s idea to combine the chicken with the rice. I luckily remembered it and decided to implement it before he got home today. The first thing I did was to put the leftover chicken in the microwave to melt the butter, which had solidified. I guess I should have seen that coming.

I put the rice and mushrooms in my cast iron frying pan after spraying the pan with no-stick stuff. When the chicken was once again in liquid, I pulled some of the meat off the bones and added that. I poured in some of the liquid as well. I still have chicken leftover. I probably won’t write another blog post when we eat that.

Before I started heating it up, I added frozen spinach. I love spinach. Steven likes it when it is part of a dish, not just by itself. So I add it whenever it seems appropriate.

It did not take long for everything to heat through. Steven declared it tasty. I hope my readers will declare the blog post OK.

Monday during our various movements dealing with the computer (see yesterday’s post), Steven and I got a little hungry. I suggested lunch at Brian’s Roast Beef Deli.

We easily found a parking place on Main street and easily found a table at Brian’s, even though they were doing a brisk lunch business. The menus were on the table, under plexiglass. I got up and checked the Specials board as well. Lots of good choices.

Steven decided on a deluxe hamburger with macaroni salad. I got garlic boneless chicken wings and a side of macaroni and cheese. I had been thinking of that macaroni and cheese ever since I suggested Brian’s. Seven got coffee to drink. I daringly ordered a draft beer, smallest size.

The waitress was one we’ve seen before. I asked her if she had lost weight since I last saw her. I always hesitate before I ask that question. I’m afraid the answer will be, “What, you thought I was FAT the last time you saw me?” I usually meet with a good response, though, and so it was this time. She had been trying to lose a few pounds and was glad it showed.

Our food was delicious. While we ate I noticed a note below the plexiglass on the table talking about how all the food was fresh made from the finest ingredients. I could tell. They were some of the best boneless wings I’ve ever had.

A lady Steven knows came in while we were there. She and her luncheon companion were sharing a large antipasto.

“Ooh, that looks good; I should’ve gotten that,” I said. “That’s what I do in restaurants,” I explained. “I look at what other people are eating and see what looks good.”

The lady said she thought my lunch had looked pretty good. I assured her it was. She may get the boneless wings next time.

We greatly enjoyed our lunch at Brian’s. It made a nice interlude in the midst of our computer dealings.
