It’s Not a Crime to Wine Instead of Whine

I did not go running today, so anybody can feel free to judge me, if they are so inclined.  I don’t know if I can manage much more than a Tired Tuesday post.  But maybe I could share a few photos of a previous Mohawk Valley Adventure I did not write about.

I stupidly cannot remember her name!

We often go to wine tastings at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer,  as I believe I have mentioned.  We took a number of pictures at a recent tasting of 19 Crimes wine, one of my all time favorites (what a surprise).  Above is the lovely lady who poured.

19 Crimes wines have a different crime printed on each cork.  Naturally I am trying to collect all nineteen.  Full disclosure: I don’t have any idea how close I am.

An employee of the store also got in on the fun.

We had a fun time tasting the wine and taking pictures. And now I have managed to make a post NOT whining about how I can’t make a decent post today.

Valley Wine and Liquor is located at 326 S. Caroline St., Herkimer, NY, phone number 315-867-5800. They are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday,  12 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

 

Who me? Buy Wine?

I often go to tastings at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer and rarely make blog posts about them.  It is a little silly of me, because I usually take notes.  Sometimes I even take a picture of the person pouring.  Today, I thought I would make a post about tastings we have attended the past two days.

Friday I made sure our friend Kim came with us, as I saw there were sweet wines to be tasted.  Kim is an excellent wine tasting partner for me, because she likes sweet wines while I like dry ones.  One of us is sure to be happy!

Friday was a tasting of Bolla Wines.  We began with a Prosecca, which is a sweet sparkling wine.  We all agreed it would be delightful in a mimosa.  Next came a sparkling Pinot Grigio.  I was especially interested in this, as I love sparkling wines (otherwise known as champagne,  by the way).  I liked it but was not in love with it.

Next we tasted the Pinot Grigion (not sparkling).  I liked it better.   The Chianti I liked best of all.  Full disclosure: for years I was resistant to trying Chianti,  because of that line in Silence of the Lambs.  I enjoyed this Chianti quite a bit and purchased a bottle.

It was a fun tasting!

Here is Danielle, who was pouring,  with Kim and Steven. Danielle mentioned she would be back on Saturday with 19 Crimes.  Kim was busy, but Steven and I LOVE 19 Crimes.

Accordingly, we returned this afternoon and sipped a taste of illegality.  I mentioned how I especially love 19 Crimes because of my abiding interest in murder.  Our first taste was of the new to us Sauvignon Block.  Please note the play  on words: blanc/block, as in cell block.  Get it?

I liked it a lot.  Notes of citrus but not too grapefruity.  The other wines we had already tasted:  Hard Chard (tangy), Red Blend (the original and my favorite), Uprising (aged in Bourbon barrels), and Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course I tasted them again; how else could I decide what to buy today?

We finally decided in the Uprising,  which Steven had particularly liked.   We will probably  purchase the other kinds at another time.  I love Crime!

 

A Little Murder on a Sunday

OK, so I am still going to be two blog posts behind, because I only made one post yesterday and am only making one today.  Yes, I had big blogging plans.  They did not work out.  Now I am sitting on my couch,  typing one letter at a time with the stylus on my Tablet,  sipping 19 Crimes wine and watching an episode of Columbo on DVD.  I love Columbo.  And 19 Crimes.   It is the original red blend, by the way.

I thought I could make a Sunday Cinema post.  For one reason, I know I have pictures of the two movies we have already watched in my Media Library.

First we saw that heart warming Joan Crawford classic about the mother and daughter who reunite after 20 years, Straitjacket. I love that movie.

Next we continued the severed head theme with Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte.  I haven’t had a Severed Head Sunday in a long time.

I was also hoping to share a picture of Peter Falk as Columbo,  but I am quite frankly tired of looking through my Media Library.   I want to get back to watching the show.  Happy Sunday,  everyone.

 

 

Saturday Clam Sauce

This will be a quick cooking post before I get back to enjoying my Saturday.  I must admit, it has been a largely wasted day, and never mind why, because people who go on about their health woes are tiresome (how’s that for a little passive-aggressive whining?).  I just about managed to get the dishes done by the time Steven got home shortly after six.  I had not planned anything for supper.  Suppressing my desire to send out for a sub or Chinese, I suggested red clam sauce or maybe eggs.  Steven opted for red clam sauce and I went to work.

First, OF COURSE, I crushed up some garlic and set it to breath for fifteen minutes.  It was from the bunch I purchased at the Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival in Little Falls, NY this past September, just to give the post a little local flair.  At first I said, “I’ll only do three cloves.  I won’t go crazy with the garlic.”  Not a minute later I said, “I’ll go crazy with the garlic,” and put in the entire bulb, which was not very big anyways.  Steven did not comment; he trusts me when it comes to cooking in general and garlic in particular.

I put the dishes away while the garlic cooked in olive oil.  That’s the kind of multi-tasking I can handle.  Incidentally, I forgot to mention that I was cooking with wine, a little 19 Crimes red blend, one of my favorites.  I soon added a can of minced clam with the liquid to the garlic.  I let that boil for a little bit before adding a small can of tomato sauce.  I took a can of mushrooms and drained its liquid into the sauce can, to get the last of the sauce without adding too much more liquid to the whole.  I had told Steven I was not going to include tomato paste, that it would be a thin clam sauce.

Basil and oregano were the only spices I used.  I would have put in a few hot peppers, but I left those outside, where I had been sprinkling them over my container garden to deter squirrels.  Note to self:  purchase more hot peppers.  I considered adding tomato paste anyways but decided to wait and see if the sauce cooked down.  Soon it was time to put on water for pasta.  Ziti rigati, which was all we had besides some angel hair pasta.  Further note to self: purchase more pasta.

The sauce turned out pretty good.  I added salt, pepper and grated cheese before devouring.  Steven added salt and pepper.  He also had a large piece of bread and butter, an extra thick crust on a loaf of Spano’s hard crust Italian.  This adds another local bit, because Spano’s is in Utica, NY.  I am Mohawk Valley Girl!

 

Waiting for 19 Crimes

I thought I would take today’s Friday Lame Post to give an update on my 30 Days Without Wine.  Or you may call it 30 Days of Whine, although I must confess to doing more than my fair share of kvetching even with the wine.  Be that as it may, this is Day 27.  Yes, I’ve been counting.  How else would I know when I got to 30?

Earlier today the little devil on my shoulder (you know, like in the cartoons, when the character has a little version of himself in horns on one shoulder and one with a halo on the other?) kept saying, “27 is practically 30.  Aren’t you being a little anal retentive about this?” She went on to say, “Anyways, isn’t this no alcohol thing a bit self-aggrandizing?  Just another way of calling attention to yourself? Shouldn’t you just get over yourself and have a beer?”  I didn’t even know she knew the word “self-aggrandizing.”

The Devil Me would probably also call me out on thinking something magical might happen if I go all 30 days.  How illogical and immature, she would say.  Of course I stopped listening to that bitch when I remembered she is also the one who thinks I’m such a terrible writer.

The Angel on my other shoulder did not contribute a whole lot to the discussion.  She merely pointed out that while PROBABLY nothing magical would happen on Day 30, how would I know if I didn’t wait that long?  Anyways, there isn’t a bottle of dry red in the house, and that is what I chiefly feel like drinking.  For Day 31 I have promised myself a bottle of 19 Crimes, one of my favorites.  I think that’s worth waiting three more days for.

Right now I am reinforcing my dry behavior by watching World’s Dumbest Partiers (why is my computer underlining “partiers”?  That must be a word! What else would you call these people?).  I don’t imagine the one little glass of 19 Crimes I intend to have on Tuesday will cause me to act like one of those guys.  However, if it does, I promise to write a blog post about it.
